Top 5 Family Friendly Hikes in Georgia

When we moved back to Georgia in 2022, I knew I wanted to explore many of the hiking trails with the boys. We have many favorites, but here are our top 5:

1. Woody Gap to Preachers Rock

This is a moderate 2.0 mi out & back trail near Suches, Georgia. With kids it can take about 1.5 hours to complete. You will experience stunning mountain views at the top. This would be a great sunset hike. You can also backpack here. We did this once and the sunrise was incredible! Definitely a must if you enjoy sunrises.

2. High Shoals & Blue Hole Falls Trail

Blue Hole Falls

Enjoy this moderate 2.6 mi out & back trail with two gorgeous waterfalls! This trail is located near Hiawassee, Georgia and very family friendly. There are no restrooms at the trailhead, so it’s best to make a stop beforehand. With kids it can take about 2 hours to complete. The trail is mostly down hill on the way to the falls, so be prepared for an uphill climb on the way back.

3. Indian Seats at Sawnee Mountain

Overlooking the North Georgia Mountains in the distance

This family friendly hike is a 3.6 mi loop located near Cumming, Georgia. There are two ways you can start this hike; at the visitor center or from the bettis tribble gap parking lot. You can find restrooms at both locations before starting the hike. At the summit you are welcomed with beautiful views of the North Georgia Mountains in the distance. With kids, this trail can take you 2 hours to complete.

4. Providence Canyon State Park

Exploring the canyon floor

This family friendly hike is nicknamed Georgias little Grand Canyon! The trail itself is 1.8 mi out & back and takes you down to the canyon floor to explore 9 canyons! Canyons 1-5 in my opinion are better than the others, but definitely take the opportunity to explore all 9. This hike should take about 1.5 hours with kids and there are restrooms at the visitor center before you begin. Because this is a state park, the parking fee is $5 or you can use your Georgia State Parks Pass which is $50 for the whole year.

5. Sope Creek

Paper Mill Ruins

This trail is a 2.3 mi loop located near Marietta, Georgia and features the paper mill ruins (pictured) and a pond! Both spots are perfect for stopping for a break. The ruins run along the Chattahooche river and in the summer many people swim in the water. There are no restrooms at the trailhead for this location, so I suggest finding a place to go beforehand. With kids the you can do this family friendly hike in about 1.5 hours or make a day of it and spend time by the river!

Georgia has so many great hikes and a lot of them are perfect for the whole family! Let me know if you’ve been to any of these.
