Best Kid-friendly activities to do in Tybee

Tybee Island is a small town, but full of many adventures for the whole family. From biking, hiking, shark tooth hunting, having a beach day and exploring the local science center; there’s sure to be something for everyone!

dolphins in the wild

Ride the waves to see Dolphins in the wild

Captain Derek’s Dolphin Adventure Tour is a treat for the whole family! Have you ever seen dolphins in the wild? You’ll take a boat ride into the Atlantic ocean to view dolphins in their own natural habitat. It’s such an amazing sight to see.

Shark tooth hunting with blue river marina

Go Shark Tooth Hunting

This very popular fossil hunting excursion will have your whole family talking about it for days! Book a trip with Bull River Marina to go to shark tooth island and hunt for unique shark teeth! The island can only be accessed at low tide, so times vary for going out to the island. Be mindful that this is a 3 hour excursion, so be sure to bring snacks and water for your crew.

Experience the Tybee Marine Science Center on North Beach

A visit to the Tybee Marine Science Center was truly incredible. The whole family would surely enjoy this outing. They have a hands-on aquatic area to explore, you’ll get to learn about the local tortoise and gators that they are temporarily housing and so much more.

The kids enjoyed seeing all the wildlife and taking a break on the outside playground.

Take a Bike Ride on Tybee Island

Tybee is such a great place to see by bike! There are a couple places you can rent bikes from for your family to enjoy the day. Tim’s Bike & Beach Gear and Tybee Island Bike Rentals. We didn’t bike ride during our last visit to Tybee Island, but will definitely do it the next time we visit!

Tybee lighthouse museum

Visit the Tybee Light Station & Museum

Climb the 100+ stairs in the Tybee Lighthouse! Once you reach the top you will experience 360 views of Tybee Island. As you take a walk through the grounds of the museum, you will get to learn more about the history of Tybee Island.

You will see a number of little houses that you can walk through and learn more about. During a walk inside the kitchen the boys enjoyed a little game. They were given a board with pictures on it and had to find these items all throughout the house. Once they found the objects, I was able to read the back of the printed board to tell them what each item was and its significance.

Take a Hike at Fort Pulaski National Monument

Fort Pulaski is located a few minutes north of Tybee Island, but if you have time, it is definitely a place worth visiting with the whole family. Like most national parks, they even have a junior ranger program for the kids! It’s such a great way to include some hands-on learning while adventuring together.

Fort Pulaski offers many outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and bird watching. We decided to take the lighthouse hike. This is their longest hike in the park at 1.5 mi, but it is worth the view at the end!

Please Note: When visiting Fort Pulaski, since it is part of the National Park Services there is a $10 day pass or you can use your annual America the Beautiful National Parks pass.

Best Time to Visit Tybee Island

Tybee Island is an amazing place to visit any time of year. You will see more foot traffic in the Spring or Summer for good reason, but don’t sleep on the off season! There is still so much to do in the cooler months and there will be less crowds.

If you are looking for a holiday escape, they have many activities going on around Thanksgiving and through the new year!
